How to prepare for a disaster:
Remember that during a disaster (natural or otherwise),
once you lose electricity to your home you have lost your water supply from your well,
your heat source from your furnace, possibly your heat source for food preparation,
and your source of power for outside communication (e.g. television, radio, computer,
etc.)
- Keep a supply of drinking water on hand for drinking and food preparation.
- Keep a supply of canned and dry food on hand.
- Use a gas stove, wood stove, gas grill or camp stove to prepare food.
- Keep a supply of water on hand for flushing a toilet.
- If you cannot keep your water lines from freezing, then drain them as well as the water tanks.
- If you have a generator, run it sparingly so as to conserve your fuel supply.
- Stay off your phones (landlines and mobile phones) unless you have a real emergency.
